Exploring sustainability in the early years

‘Our children have a right to a sustainable future. They will be the policymakers and leaders of the future, so what we teach them now about the environment will directly influence the long-term health of the planet’.

(United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, 2005)

Early childhood educators have the responsibility to make education for sustainable development a part of everyday professional practice – not merely a separate subject or theme to be considered for a given time.

This workshop will leave you with:

  • Inspiration to think out of the box when creating spaces, collecting resources and integrating meaningful learning opportunities for children into their programs with an emphasis on sustainable practices.
  • A deeper understanding of the strong links between engaging children in the natural world and sustainability education.
  • Strategies for programs/organisations to reduce waste, conserve energy, promote water-wise practices and implement green cleaning.
