Implementing loose parts in your setting.

The best play comes from environments that allow children to explore their world in a variety of ways. Environments that include loose parts are infinitely more stimulating, challenging and engaging for children, increasing opportunities for children to further develop their creativity, social skills, communication, collaboration, and critical thinking.

This 2-hour workshop is suitable for educators/managers/team leaders working in LDC, FDC and OSHC settings, along with teachers/teacher aides working within primary school settings.

Be prepared to dive head-first into all thing’s loose parts, where we will be incorporating videos and photos for inspiration, group discussions/scenarios for reflection and practical learning in the Lady Gowrie Tasmania Integrated Centre’s play space.

Together we will explore:

  • What are loose parts and what are the benefits of loose parts play?
  • How do we get started with loose parts?
    • What are the best loose parts and where can these be accessed/purchased?
    • Storing and maintaining loose parts
  • Facilitating loose parts play
    • What role does the adult play?
    • Observing and understanding play with loose parts
    • Incorporating loose parts into your environment
    • Assessing Benefits vs Risks

‘In any environment, both the degree of inventiveness and creativity, and the possibility of discovery, are directly proportional to the number and kind of variables in it’ (Nicholson, S. 1971).
