Exploring sustainability in the early years
‘Our children have a right to a sustainable future. They will be the policymakers and leaders of the future, so what we teach them now about the environment will directly influence the long-term health of the planet’. (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, 2005)
‘Education and care settings are places where children learn about self, others and the world, including environmental responsibility. Services playing a role in helping children develop an understanding and respect for the natural environment and the interdependence between people, plants, animals and the land’ (Early Years Learning Framework, p.13).
‘Children develop positive attitudes and values by engaging in sustainable practices, watching adults around them model sustainable practices, and working together with educators to show care and appreciation for the natural environment’ (Hughes, 2007)
Early childhood educators have a responsibility to make education for sustainable development a part of everyday professional practice – not merely a separate subject or theme to be considered for a given time.
This workshop will explore the following themes:
- Why sustainability matters
- What are the key principles of education for sustainability and how does this look in early years practice?
- What is your environmental footprint and how does this influence sustainable practices in your working environment?
